   Alternator Tech Help

Glossary

12-volt ignition: 12 volts are present only when the key is turned on or the vehicle is running. (12-v ign., power, B+ input, ignition switch feed).

Battery power: Constant 12-volts, even when the ignition is off. (Can be referred also as power).

VSS: Vehicle Speed Sensor is a device that sends information to the ECM (Computer) about the movement of the vehicle. This is attached to the transmission.

GPS Module:: Used to operate Electric Programmable Speedometers. Very accurate and easy to install. No conections to the transmission. A stand alone device.

ECM: The computer that operates the vehicle. (ECM or PCM).

Charge Indicator Lamp:This is the circuit that energies the alternator. It must be connected to a 12-volt ignition source so the alternator receives a signal to excite (energize) it.
(Usually the color code is LG/RD - a light green wire with a red trace line on it.

MIL: Malfunction indicator lamp or check engine light. This light receives a negative signal from the ECM. The signal coming from the ECM will operate the light by supplying ground and not 12 volts.

Ground: Negative (-), The non-positive side of DC electric.

Tachometer signal: Tachometer Signal Input, tachometer feed. Wire that supplies the signal for operating a tachometer.

Blinkers (right & left): Turn indicators, turn signal. Lights that illuminate when your have activated your turn signals.

Dimmer circuit: Illumination feed, Illumination lamp feed and dash lights. This is the circuit that powers your instrument panel lights. They are wired thru the dimmer switch so the intensity level of the lights can be adjusted.

Test light: A tool that probes circuits for a 12volt signal. It lights when a correct circuit is found.

T-tap: A small hardware device that is used to connect one wire to another wire without cutting or splicing. The T-tap wraps around a wire and when closed shut (using pliers), will pierce the insulating material that shields the conductor and will wedge the conductor in its metal contacts producing a quick, clean and non destructive connection.

In-line fuse: A fuse holder that is connected in series to a device for circuit protection.
